National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day--long-ish post

Before I left for work today I turned off my laptop.   As a bad computer owner it is a very rare thing for me to do.  I'm a leave it on all the time kind of gal.  I can roll over in the middle of the night, put my finger on the touch pad and poof, up it comes.  Some strange demon must have possessed me this morning though.   Not only did I turn it off, I clicked the button to update it too.  It has been over an hour since I turned the machine back on and it is still only 28% complete with the updates.   It will also turn itself off and back on multiple times before it is done.   What was I thinking?  Will this even be done before bedtime?  How much of an addiction to this machine do I have?

End rant... mostly.

On the ride to work today strange thoughts entered my mind.   I was noticing the beauty in the sky as the sun was starting to rise and there were clouds and trees along the sides of the highway.   For some reason a few memories entered my mind in fairly quick succession.   One from a photography class I took,  one of paintings in an art museum and one of a very nice gentleman that was happy and polite to me in a grocery store a few weeks ago.   This also led to me thinking of models and a book one of the students is reading.

Anyhow,  in the photography class we were taught to not line things up with complete symmetry,  that the eye should travel across the photo and tell a story or something like that.   I believe this is something that I learned or noticed visiting museums and looking at art as well.   Some random book I listened to I remember mentioned that humans tend to find beauty in symmetry (which is what made me think of models).   When I think about it, even the most symmetrical people are generally photographed off center in one way or another.  Yet it is supposedly their symmetry that helps to make them attractive.  The more appealing photo of the sunrise will have the sun to one side where it seems to shine on trees or a pond or body of water.  A person may find an old gnarly tree to hold beauty and intrigue.   Even a leaf will hold more interest if one edge is curled or there is a bug upon it.

The book a student is reading seems to be about a girl who was born with some kind of deformity.  The student is only to read to for me a minute a day of the same page for a week so I don't know much of the plot.  The character in the book is obviously struggling with adolescent issues because of her appearance.   The very nice man in the store also had some kind of deformity or had had an accident at some point to disfigure his face a little.  I didn't stare or ask.  I generally am not the type to start a random conversation at a grocery store, although I like to think I am getting better at stepping out of my box.  I did look at him when he spoke to me and saw the other, more important things--his kindness and happiness.  Where the eye is supposed to travel across a picture,  doing so in real life to a person is rude.

Is there a point I am hoping to make here?  Not really.  I am finding this symmetry vs asymmetry thing to be a bit of a dichotomy.   Many would find the character in the book and the man in the store with their less than symmetrical attributes to not be attractive yet it is a lack of symmetry that is appealing in nature, although much of nature is also symmetrical.  So the question that I may research, if my computer works again,  is why symmetry is so important when most things that are beautiful aren't completely symmetrical?  or something like that...

Or I could just be wrong...

Some pretty cloud colors.

Thank you for your time.

The 6th of December--Vlog-- Advent!!

Gideon needed an adult tonight so his parents could go out for some grown-up time so we made a Vlog.

Seven minutes!!

Here is the link to the movie Gideon and I watched tonight.  Well, I mostly did vocabulary for the 7th grade Science class I para in, but Gideon watched it and I sort of did.  Doing a Vlog with Gideon tonight is my happy for today.  He was himself and not trying to be a character and I enjoy that more than when he tries to put on a show.  That is not to say that I don't like his shows, I do!  Just not so much for my Blog/Vlog.  I think it would be cool if he started some kind of online presence of his own that he can do shows for.

Peace

December the 5th

This is the 88th anniversary of the repeal of prohibition (link).  Just thought I would start off with a little piece of trivia.  After working my second job today I am again exhausted.  Asking myself why am I not in bed sleeping yet and answering because that would require getting up...

Things that happened at school today:

  • I got the courage to speak with a superior about some suggestions in a class.
  • The experiment we started yesterday in Science failed, as in the control changed, so we are going to try again.  The control is what isn't supposed to change.
  • It is Hour of Code week.  I got to use some of the coding games today during class while the students were.

Sunrise

Although it is frustrating me at the moment, the Google Doodle this week is my happy.  I really think the Hour of Code Week is an important thing.  Until I got stuck at a step I was enjoying it!  Hahaha!

The 4th of December

This morning I saw the Super Moon just before getting to work.  Unfortunately, no picture of the moon.  I did catch the sunrise.

My daughter shared this comedy on YouTube today and here it is for your viewing enjoyment.

We just stayed up and finished watching Rogue One.  It was alright, I found that I had a difficult time following it because I kept trying to multitask.

Some students don't give their full attention.  To be as vague as possible, today one of the lessons, well, I'll say dealt with a circle of life-on a cellular level.  Anyhow, I pointed to the different parts of this and explained it going around the circle, repeatedly until they understood.  Changing the way I worded the process a little here and there.  Some students it only took a few times around before they understood, some asked the right questions to understand and some took longer than others.  The look in the eyes of a student when they 'get' it is my happy for today.  Whether anything is retained or not, only time will tell.

Full (Super) Moon December 3rd

This evening I watched way too many YouTube videos.  This one, just over 9 minutes, is about hiking without a stove.  Definitely something I have been considering.  One of the things I haven't been seeing on these videos is people eating trail mix.  I will have to research that next time I binge watch.

The day was spent out at a coffee shop with friends and out walking followed by stuff I needed to get done while watching YouTube.  Relaxing day.  I spent some time talking with a friend of my daughter's.  I have known her, but not well, for a few years.  We know some really great people.

For today my happy is that I finally gave notice for my retail job.  December 18th is my last day.  The best part is that my biggest (irrational) fear about quitting was that my manager would call me and cry and whine and beg me to stay.  I've been the sounding board when she has vented to me in the past.  Thankfully this hasn't yet happened.  Once I no longer have this additional job I hope to get more sleep, better exercise and empty my storage unit.

were at the coffee shop this morning.

December 2nd--Short

The exhaustion of this last week is here.  My alarm is off until Monday.  I was invited to go watch the football game tomorrow but I think I will stay closer to home and organize things for next week and do laundry and things.  There was an SCA event today, Yule.  It is our Christmastime event.  The children who came were all given something from Father Christmas.  The adults gifting was not so straight forward.  Adults could bring something they no longer needed and put it down on a table for people look at.  Then the years people joined the SCA are called with the most recent people first so they get the pick of the pile.  I didn't have time to find anything and didn't participate.

Getting to spend time with friends is my happy for today.  Too tired for more.

Peace.

Happy December! Kinda short

Here is an attempt at a poem...

Ding ding the bell did ring
The students are here for the day
Pencil scratch, they try to delay
Language Arts, let's write an essay
Art class let's make paper mache'
Papers crinkle, they want to play
Math we are making an array
It's time for lunch, don't drop your tray!
Science, microscope, no horseplay
Social studies end of the day
Ding ding the bell did ring

Getting home today and seeing the family is today's happy. My daughter told me that she hasn't seen me in 3 days and that is too long when we live in the same house.

Obligatory sky photo. 😜

Gideon lost a tooth yesterday!
But how about that sweater!?!
