Things I am learning at this new job-
My political opinions are not all the same as the teachings of the school. Thankfully they aren't too different.
Not all of the coping techniques I used with my children are forgotten, just a little rusty and need to be polished.
I am rather out of touch with today's youth.
Still trying to decide if watching kids go through puberty is right for me.
I need more sleep.
Getting to help all the students is impossible. Trying to figure out which ones need the attention when, is also impossible.
Life isn't fair.
From somewhere in my mind I still am able to find and ask some of the right questions to help at least some of the students to get their work done. I was also able to stay calm when some seemed like they were borderline anxiety issue over getting the assignment done. This, helping students get through the day, is why this job may be good for me. It will serve as my happy for today. I want to say that these things are a small step in my being good at this job. What I know is that there will always be things to learn. No matter how much training someone has, or knowledge in their head, each person is an individual and must be treated as such.
Peace.

September the 6th
For some reason Gideon brought up Groundhog Day tonight. I seem to remember the saying concerning the shadow to be something like this--If the groundhog sees his shadow on this day then there will be 6 more weeks of winter, if he does not, then there will be 6 more weeks until spring. The Wikipedia page has a slightly different definition. The Wiki also goes into percentages that the groundhog's predictions are accurate. I think that is why their definition is a little different than mine. My definition means the same thing, so the creature would be accurate 100% of the time... unless of course Summer decided to show up super early. 😜
After work today I picked up Gideon to run errands and hang with me so that his parents could go to a movie. We stopped for supper at a local diner where they handed out paper for kids to color. Gideon noticed one hanging by itself. It was blue, white and red. He commented on it a few times but eventually came to the conclusion that the artist wanted it to resemble the Flag of France, This is my happy for today, that my 5 year old grandshog can identify a flag from another country.
Sorry, no pics.

September 5 -- First day at the new job
There is this thing that I haven't had to do much for quite a while, it is called, getting to work on time. The hours with my retail/data entry job have been flexible for the most part. As long as I got the work done on time I could be in the stores whenever it was open. This is not the case with working in a school. I made it to work on time, but there was no real time to spare. Tomorrow I am hoping for time to spare.
Other than that my day seemed to go alright. But mid morning I had kind of settled in a bit with what I felt I should be doing. Whether I will ever get to know the names of all the students or not remains to be seen. Some of them remind me of other people and that is helping. They all seem to be a good bunch. The schedule is going to be interesting for me to learn. It alternates, I believe every other day.
After school I did my other job. I am weary, but I am worried I won't be able to sleep. I need to get up in about 6 hours. It was supposed to be an early night...
There was that point today where things started to click. When I realized that it was okay for me to wander between the desks and look at the students papers-at least to see that they were doing their work-and even to see if they needed help occasionally. That part of today is my happy.

The 4th of September--Last day of Harper's--Vlog
From what I can tell we all had a nice long, busy weekend. The last day of this event is really just packing and clean up. I stayed as late as I could to help with that. I did more dishes and swept out cabins and helped some people pack up their stuff. I overdid it a little with my hand, just enough to remind me to take it easy. Then I took a walk by the lake that the camp we were at is by as a way to rest the hand.
Today my happy is sleep. Which I am heading for now. It has been a long day and I am looking forward to sleep and its restorative powers.

The 3rd of September--Harper's day 3
It has been a long, rainy day. I have spent a bunch of time in the kitchen doing dishes this event. It has become a challenge at this point to figure out the best way to place the cups and plates and bowls etc so that they don't fall out of the trays (and clog the system) or turn over in the trays (and come out very sanitized but not clean filled with water). Every once in a while I get it close.
The results for all the competitions were announced at court this afternoon. The bardic was last night and there were marshal activities over the weekend as well. My daughter won the bardic competition. She is the Baronial Bard until next year when there will be another competition which she will organize. Throughout the year she may be asked to perform at Baronial things. I think I posted her performances yesterday. She missed the court due to family responsibilities off site so Gideon and I accepted in her stead. I recorded most of that. We tried to keep her award a secret but eventually she had to be told. She kept asking who won and nobody seemed to be able to remember. When one of the people came into the room who chose her as the winner, we had to let her know then. She was very surprised.
Soon the children's bardic circle will start... not a competition. My daughter and her husband are running that. They go home tonight and I stay til tomorrow to help clean up after the event. I haven't slept well the past 2 nights, I am hoping for better tonight.

An impromptu puppet show put on by some kids.

After court when my daughter got her award.
I am posting early while I await the children's bardic. My happy for today is that my daughter won the bardic competition.
September the 2nd--Harper's day 2
Sept 2
This is the first time we have offered a meal plan at a weekend event as a Barony. It seems to be working alright, I am sure the man running it has had some ideas for improvement with implementing, that is what usually happens the first time around, but the food has been great so far. I helped clean up after in the kitchen and let Gideon play in the dining hall, thinking his mom should arrive anytime. She didn't. Eventually I checked my phone and she had classes to teach and was getting ready for and teaching them. I knew she had classes, just didn't know when. So Gideon and I got to spend more time together.
By the time mid afternoon arrived I was ready for and took a nap. My daughter woke me up in time for feast. A tradition we have is to toast the royalty, then the the Baron and Baroness followed by the autocrat and cooks, servers etc. The people who speak the toasts are chosen by order of precidence. So the Baron toasts their majesties, Baroness their highnesses, then whoever the highest ranking people are following that. Any how, in the room tonight I ranked high enough to be the person to toast the autocrat. She is a dear friend, and I messed up her last name. 😐 Public speaking fail for me. Tomorrow I hope for a lesson.
During a lull between courses Gideon gets up and decides to perform for the Baron and Baroness and the rest of the head table. He didn't tell anyone, just decided to do it. Not being at the head table, we didn't hear a lot of what went on, but it seemed to be an imaginary magic card trick.
After great was the bardic competition.
What I caught of the bardic competition was really good. There are some really talented people who came to perform. My daughter was among them. I did get part of that on video.
It was a good day, many things to be happy for. But along with the above was the arrival of my toothbrush --- which I forgot at home --- followed by my getting to brush my teeth. Some people like to say they aren't human until they have had their coffee, I hate coffee, I need to brush my teeth!
The pictures are backwards in time... hopefully I chose well. I prefer to do this on my computer.

September 1st. Harper's Retreat day 1
Gideon and I are at an SCA event. There is not enough internet (poor 1G) for me to get this uploaded so I will try in the morning from the dining hall. We are snuggled on a cot in a cabin. It is chilly out but I think we have enough to stay warm. He was so excited to come here. Until just after 9 he seemed to be having fun with friends. I think they got tired and things went downhill when they went to bed. Thankfully Gideon is a great kid and rebounds fairly easily. We came back to the cabin and a friend told him a story. He still was awake after the story, but is snoozing now.
Happiness is a warm sleeping bag and hat... which I need to find.
